  • Rose Aranoff Cohen, beloved wife of Alfred S. Cohen, mother of Janice Weinreb, Barbara Yasgur and Benay Nesher, died on Aug. 14 in Jerusalem, Israel at age 93. Rose was born in Shenandoah, Pa. in 1915 where her family of 10 had a wholesale grocery. Alfred and Rose lived in Ventnor for over 50 years before moving to Israel. For the last five years they had been living in Jerusalem, Israel, carrying out a life long dream of living in the Holy Land where they were surrounded by two of their daughters, son-in-laws and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Rose was an active member of the Beth Judah Sisterhood, Rodef Shalom Sisterhood, Hadassah and Amit. She was a leader of Torah learning in her home and in the various organizations in which she was active. She was a supporter of the Hebrew Academy of Atlantic County, where her children were among the first students in the school. Rose and her husband Alfred were the proprietors of Polly's Dress Shop which was located on Atlantic Avenue for decades.Rose had a dynamic personality and will be greatly missed by her large immediate and extended family and friends. She was the last survivor of her 7 siblings. The Aranoff family's strength and history will continue through the many seeds that they planted around the world from New York to Israel to Sydney, Australia.

  • Burton Aronoff, 90, of 901 S.W. 5th St., Boca Raton, Fla., died Saturday at Boca Community Hospital, Fla. Born in Shenandoah, he was a son of the late Isadore and Sophie Aronoff. He was employed as a publisher and was a former member of the Kehillat Israel Synagogue. He was a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Betty Miller Aronoff; two sons, Dr. Stephen, husband of Deborah Aronoff, Pipersville, and Aaron, husband of Deanna Aronoff, California; and five grandchildren. Graveside services with interment will be held at 1 p.m. Wedensday in Kehillat Israel Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. Contributions can be made to Temple University, Department of Journalism, School of Communication Burton Aronoff Award for News Writing.   • Relva Freddline Baron, 87, formerly of Indiana Avenue, Shenandoah Heights, passed away Saturday at the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg. Born in Minersville, April 16, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Fanny Freddline. She was preceded in deather by her husband, Ben, in 1994; a son Richard. Surviving is a son, Michael, Hummelstown. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today from Oravitz Home for Funerals, Inc., 40 N. Jardin St., Shenandoah, with Rabbi Muroff officiating. Calling hours are from noon today until the time of services. Interment will be in Kehillat Israel Cemetery, Shenandoah.

KAPLAN, MAX; From Pottsville Republican: July 1, 2006
  • Max Kaplan, DDS, 95, of Pottsville, formerly of Frackville, died Thursday evening at Providence Place Retirement Community. Born in Hazleton, April 14, 1911, he was a son of the late Morris and Gussie (Seleznick) Kaplan. Raised in Mahanoy City, he was a graduate of Mahanoy City High School Class of 1929. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree and Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Pittsburgh in 1934, he practiced dentistry for 60 years with offices in Frackville and Hazleton. Dr. Kaplan was an Army Air Force verteran of World War II and obtained the rank of captain. During World War II, he practiced dentistry in China while serving along the Burma Road. Dr. Kaplan was a member and past president of the Schuylkill County Dental Society, a former trustee of the Pennyslvania Dental Association and a member of the American Dental Association. He was a member and past president of the former B'nai Israel Synagogue, Frackville, a member of the Kehillat Israel Synangogue, Shenandoah, and a member of the Oheb Zedeck Synagogue, Pottsville. Dr. Kaplan was a charter member and first president of the Frackville Lions club, a member and former trustee of the B.P.O. Elks 1533, Frackville, and a member of the American Legion Post 398, Frackville, where he was recently honored as the oldest veteran in the post. He was preceded in dead by his wife, to who he was married for 47 years, Dorothee Lande Kaplan in 1996; a sister, Molly Cohen. Dr. Kaplan is survived by four children, Betty, wife of Jack Marino, Birmingham, Ala., and Bonnie, wife of Michael Yanuskiewicz, Alan, husband of Susan Kaplan, and Arthur, husband of Kristine Kelly-Kaplan, all of Frackville, grandchildren, Justin, Jarad, Alyse, Rachyl, Ryan, Cody and Ava Grace; a sister, Sara Yudacufski, Miami Beach, Fla.; brothers Charles Kaplan, Coconut Creek, Fla. and David Kaplan, Red Bank, N.J.; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Albert L. Gricoski Funeral Home, 48 N. Broad Mountain Ave., Frackville, with Rabbi Leah Richman officiating. Donations can be made to the Max Kaplan Memorial Fund c/o Wachovia Bank, 2 S. Lehigh Ave. Frackville, PA 17931, where proceeds will be distributed to various children's charities as per his request.   • Rhoda d. Yudacufski Klemow, Frackville, died Thursday at her residence. Born in Frackville, she was a daughter of the late Abraham and Sarah (Goldin) Yudacufski. She graduated from Frackville High School and McCann School of Business, Mahanoy City. She was co-owner of the Fox Furniture Store, Frackville, with her husband for more than 45 years. She previously worked for the government as a clerk in Philadelphia. She was a member of the former B'Nai Brith Synagogue, Frackville, and the Kehillat Israel Synagogue, Shenandoah. She was precedeed in death by her husband, Harry H. Klemow, to whom she was married 48 years; two sisters, Julia Cotler and Esther Fox; three brothers, Ike, Herman, and Morris Yudacufski. She was the last member of her immediate family. Surviving are a son, Marc B. Klemow, husband of JoAnne, Frackville, four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Religous services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Albert L. Gricoski Funeral Home, Frackville, with Rabbi Alan Berg officiating. Interment will be in Kehillat Israel Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. KLITZNER, JACOB "JAKE"

  • Jacob "Jake" Klitzner, 88, of 103 N. Jardin St., Shenandoah, died Saturday at home. Born in Slatington, Aug. 6, 1917, he was the son of the late Fishel and Sarah Sweet Klitzner. He attended local schools. He was an Army Veteran of WWII. He was the former owner of Klitzner Ford, Shenandoah. He was an Associate Member of Hadassah and a volunteer manager at Kehillat Israel Cemetery from 1984 until his last breath. He was also a member of B'Nai Brith. Surviving are his wife Bess "Harris Apple" Klitzner; a brother, Moe Klitzner, Shenandoah; a sister, Molly Schwartz, Florida; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today from Oravitz Home For Funerals, 40 N. Jardin St., Shenandoah, followed by burial in Kehillat Israel Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services today. The family requests contributions be made in his memory to Kehillat Israel Cemetery Association, 103 N.   • Louise S. Klitzner, 87, of 373 Florida Ave., Shenandoah Heights, died Sunday at Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Born in Mahanoy City, April 23, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Ida Tulin Golin. She was a graduate of Mahanoy Area High School. She was a member of the former Kehilliat Israel Synagogue, Shenandoah, past president of Bnai Brith, and a member of Hadassah. She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris "Moe" Klitzner; two brothers, Sonny Golin and Babe Golin; and a sister, Hannah Ellis. Surviving are two daughters, Paula Wright, wife of John, Shenandoah, and Debi Linhard, Philadelphia; two grandsons, James and Brian Gadinski; a granddaughter, Irirsa Linhard; and a great-granddaughter, Porsha Linhard.
    Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday from Nice-Hart Funeral Home Inc., 9 N. Lehigh Ave., Frackville. The Rabbi Melody Davis will be officiating. Interment will be in Kehilliat Israel Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights.

  • Morris Klitzner, 90, of 373 Florida Ave., Shenandoah Heights, died Friday at his residence. Born in Sladington, April 14, 1916, he was the son of the late Phillip and Sarah Klitzner. He was the proprietor of Klitzner Auto Parts, Klitzner Auto Glass, and Klitzner Auto Sales. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII. He was a member of Kehillat Israel Synagogue, Shenandoah, and Oheb Zedeck Synagogue, Pottsville. He was also a member of American Legion Post 74, Mahanoy City. He was preceded in death by a brother Jacob "Jake" Klitzner, in 2006. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, the former Louise Golin; two daughters, Paula Hopko, Saint Clair and Debbie Linhard, Philadelphia; a sister Molly Schwartz, Florida; three grandchildren, James Gadinski, Brian Gadinski, and Rissy Linhard; a great-grandchild, Porsha; nieces and nephews.   • Sylvia Zubroff Siswein, 86, of 214 W. Oak St., Shenandoah, passed away Sunday at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown area, with her loving family present. Born in Minersville, Nov. 15, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Abraham and Franny (Freedline) Zubroff. Sylvia was a graduate of the Minersville High School. She and her late husband, Harold Siswein, were the proprietors of Siswein's Furniture Strore, Shenandoah, for many years. Mrs. Siswein was a member of Kehillat Israel Synagogue, Shenandoah, and Hadassah Women's Organization. Sylvia will be remembered for her charity to many local churches and civic organizations. Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Harold; a daughter, Marjorie R. Siswein Arnold; a granddaughter, Shana Krasno. Surviving are a daughter, Pam Krasno, Shenandoah; a brother, Dr. Leonard S. Zubroff, Southfield, Mich.; a sister, Lillian Melman, Harrisurg; five grandchildren: Atty. Jason Krasno and his wife, Nikki, and their son, Sylvia's great-grandson, Benjamin Krasno, Philadelphia; Faith Krasno, PhD, Philadelphia; Jesse Krasno, a graduate of Hunter College pursuing his career in psychology, New York City; Atty. Karen Heering, wife of Dr. David Heering, and their children, Sylvia's great-grandchildren, Kylie, Harrison and Matthew Heering, Millstone, N.J., and Atty.   • Alfred E. Ufberg, Scranton, originally a resident of Shenandoah, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital, Scranton. His wife of 66 years is the former Leah Abrams. Born in Shenandoah, he was a son of the late Jacob and Minnie Ufberg. He was a graduate of Shenandoah High School. From his childhood, he participated in his family's furniture business, Ufberg's Furniture Store, Shenandoah, which he grew and expanded greatly over 50-plus years. He was the sole owner and operator before his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the Kehillat Israel Congregation, Shenandoah, where he was active for many years, a member of Temple Israel, Scranton, for many years and a member of Beth Shalom Congregation, Scranton. He was a member and past president of the Shenandoah Rotary, as well as a longtime member of the Shenandoah Elks Club, where he served as an officer. He was honored by the furniture industry for his outstanding business accomplishments. He was also active in numerous Jewish, civic, and charitable organizations. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara; a sister Dorothy Berson; three brothers Sam, Max and David. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, Murray, Kingston; Howard, Scranton, and Robert, Waverly; 13 beloved grandchildren; five great-grandchildren who delighted him; nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held at 11:30 am.m today at Beth Shalom Synagogue, Clay Avenue and Vine Street, Scranton with Rabbi Yisroel Brotsky officiating. Interment will be in Kehillat Israel Cemetery, Shenandoah. Shiva will be observed from 7 to 9 p.m. today and Tuesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Ufberg, 550 Clay Avenue., Apt. 5-D, Scranton. Shiva will also be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at the residence of his son and daughter-in-law, Atty. and Mrs. Murray Ufberg, 644 Charles Ave., Kingston.   • Leah Ufberg, of Scranton, passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital in Scranton on Tuesday, July 14, 2009.
    Born in Lithuania, she was a daughter of the late Rabbi Abraham and Hannah Abrams. She spent her childhood in Manhattan and Brooklyn, where she graduated from high school.
    She then resided for the majority of her adulthood in Shenandoah, Pa., after she married her beloved husband, Alfred, who preceded her in 2007. They moved to Scranton in 1986, where she was active in B�nai B�rith Women and was a life member of Hadassah. She was a member of Beth Shalom Congregation and its sisterhood. She was also a member of numerous other religious, civic and philanthropic organizations and enjoyed many and varied friendships.
    She was a patron of the theater and an avid reader. Her enthusiasm for life was embraced by her entire family, as she was a very loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
    She was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara; her brother, Max Abrams; and her sister, Esther Kunin.
    Surviving are three sons, Murray Ufberg and his wife, Margie of Kingston, Howard Ufberg and his wife, Marcia of Scranton, and Robert Ufberg and his wife, Laney of Scranton. She is also survived by her brother, Rabbi Leo Abrahams, of B'nai B'rak, Israel, as well as 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
    The funeral will be held today at 1 p.m. at the Beth Shalom Congregation, Vine Street and Clay Avenue, Scranton, with services by Rabbi Yisroel Brotsky. Interment will take place at the Kehillat Israel Cemetery, Shenandoah.
    Shiva will be observed at the residence of Mrs. Ufberg, 550 Clay Avenue, Apartment 5-D, Scranton, this evening, from 7 to 8:30; Thursday, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m.; Friday, from 1 to 3 p.m.; and Sunday, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. On Sunday, Shiva will also be observed at the home of Murray and Margie Ufberg, 644 Charles Avenue, Kingston, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. On Monday, Shiva will be observed solely at the home of Murray and Margie Ufberg from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m.
    Memorial contributions may be made to Hadassah or Beth Shalom Congregation, 1025 Vine Street, Scranton, PA 18510.
